World’s First Multi-Column Dividing Wall Column Network Replaces a Full Distillation Train
Four DWC Prime columns replace a conventional seven-column distillation train at an acetone-derivatives complex in India.
The challenge
The client’s separation section relied on a conventional train of seven distillation columns. Trains like this carry a heavy penalty in capital cost, plot space and — above all — energy: every extra column means another reboiler, condenser and set of utilities. Critically for this site, plot space availability was a major constraint — there was limited room to accommodate a large multi-column train. The client needed the same separation duty delivered with far less equipment, energy and footprint, without compromising product purity.
The solution: a whole-train DWC network
DWC Innovations applied its DWC Prime dividing wall column technology at the scale of the entire train. Four DWC Prime columns were configured as an integrated network to perform the duties previously handled by seven conventional columns — the world’s first implementation of multiple dividing wall columns replacing a full conventional distillation sequence within a single process.
DWCI’s scope included the basic engineering package (BEP) for the DWC Prime columns and the supply of the company’s proprietary column internals.

Four DWC Prime columns now do the work of seven — cutting installed capital cost by ~30% and utility consumption by 28%, while shrinking the required plot space by 35%. The expected simple payback is about four months, and the plant met its required product-purity specifications, entering commercial operation in June 2026.
Why it matters
This project is proof that dividing wall columns are not limited to isolated debottlenecking. An engineered network of DWC Prime columns can replace a whole distillation train — compressing equipment count, energy, capital and footprint simultaneously — with a payback measured in months, while meeting demanding product specifications in live commercial operation.
